COFAR Coalition to Stop Gov. Patrick's Facility-Closure Plan

June 19: Conference Committee Betrays the Most Vulnerable! The six-member Conference Committee defied both houses of the legislature in adding facility-closure language and removing the Fernald Center from weakened feasibility study language. Along with brutal cuts across the board, this budget goes to Governor Patrick with the blessings of legislative leaders.

Read COFAR's June 19 press release on how the feasibility studies could have stopped Governor Patrick's expensive facility-closure plan and helped fill the gap in day and respite services for persons living at home -- cuts falling hardest on committed family members who draw least on the DDS budget.

“We are deeply disappointed in the governor today. The economic crisis we are experiencing requires some tough decisions but this [facility closure plan] is clearly the wrong choice. We should not and cannot try to solve our financial problems on the backs of the people that need this critical care and the workers who provide it. As the voice of more than 400,000 working men and women in this state we will do everything in our power to convince the governor and other decision makers that this is bad public policy.”
